Question 1

What is a helical pile (screw pile)?

Accepted Answer

A helical pile — also called a screw pile or helical screw pile — is a galvanized steel foundation driven into the ground using a hydraulic torque motor. The helical (screw-shaped) plates on the shaft grip the soil as the pile is rotated in, creating a strong, stable foundation without excavation or concrete pouring. They are the modern alternative to traditional concrete footings for decks, sheds, garages, and additions.

Question 2

Are helical piles the same as screw piles?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Helical piles, screw piles, and helical screw piles all refer to the same product — a steel shaft with helical plates that is rotated into the ground to create a foundation. The terms are used interchangeably in Ontario.

Question 3

How much do helical piles cost in Ontario?

Accepted Answer

JKG Services installs helical piles starting from $350 per pile in Elora, Fergus, Guelph, Kitchener, Waterloo, Orangeville, and surrounding areas. Final pricing depends on pile depth, soil conditions, and load requirements. Call 519-546-6541 for a free quote.

Question 4

Are helical piles better than concrete footings for a deck?

Accepted Answer

For most Ontario deck projects, helical piles outperform concrete footings: they are load-ready immediately (no 28-day curing), they resist frost heave better, they require no excavation, and they are permit-approved. JKG Services recommends helical piles for all new deck foundations.

Question 5

How deep are helical piles installed in Ontario?

Accepted Answer

In Ontario, helical piles are typically installed below the frost line — a minimum of 4 feet (1.2m) deep, though most residential installations go 5–7 feet depending on soil conditions and load requirements.

Question 6

How long does helical pile installation take?

Accepted Answer

A typical residential helical pile installation for a deck foundation takes 2–4 hours. Because there is no concrete to pour or cure, the structure can be built on the piles the same day.

Question 7

Do helical piles require a building permit in Ontario?

Accepted Answer

Any deck over 24 inches above grade in Ontario requires a building permit, and the foundation must be permit-approved. JKG Services installs permit-approved galvanized helical piles that meet Ontario Building Code requirements.

Question 8

How much does a deck cost in Elora or Fergus Ontario?

Accepted Answer

Custom decks built by JKG Services start from $22 per square foot. A typical 12×16 deck (192 sq ft) starts around $4,200 for materials and labour. Final price depends on size, materials, and design complexity. Call 519-546-6541 for a free quote.

Question 9

Does JKG Services build decks on helical pile foundations?

Accepted Answer

Yes. JKG Services installs helical pile foundations for all new deck builds. Helical piles are load-ready the same day — no concrete curing required — and resist frost heave better than traditional concrete footings.

Question 10

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Ontario?

Question 12
