What Are They?

Helical Piles vs. Concrete Footings

A helical pile — also called a screw pile or helical screw pile — is a galvanized steel shaft with helical (screw-shaped) plates welded along its length. A hydraulic torque motor rotates the pile into the ground, gripping the soil with each revolution until it reaches the required depth and torque.

Unlike poured concrete footings, helical piles require no excavation, no concrete mixing, and no curing time. Once the pile is driven to depth, it is immediately load-bearing — your deck framing can begin the same day.

For Ontario homeowners, helical piles also outperform concrete in frost resistance. The piles are driven well below the frost line, eliminating the heave and cracking that affects shallow concrete footings over time.

Why Choose Helical Piles

6 Reasons Ontario Homeowners Choose Screw Piles

Load-ready same day

No concrete to pour, no 28-day curing wait. Your deck framing can start the same day the piles go in.

Frost-resistant

Driven below Ontario's frost line, helical piles resist heave that cracks and shifts poured concrete footings over time.

Permit-approved

All JKG helical pile installations meet Ontario Building Code requirements and are suitable for permitted deck projects.

No excavation

Screw piles are rotated into the ground — no digging, no mess, no concrete truck on your lawn.

Galvanized steel

Hot-dip galvanized coating protects against corrosion for decades in Ontario soil conditions.

Owner-installed

Jason handles every installation personally. No subcontractors, no surprises.

FAQ

Helical Pile & Screw Pile Questions

What is a helical pile (screw pile)?

A helical pile — also called a screw pile or helical screw pile — is a galvanized steel foundation driven into the ground using a hydraulic torque motor. The helical (screw-shaped) plates on the shaft grip the soil as the pile is rotated in, creating a strong, stable foundation without excavation or concrete pouring. They are the modern alternative to traditional concrete footings for decks, sheds, garages, and additions.

How much do helical piles cost in Elora or Fergus Ontario?

JKG Services installs helical piles starting from $350 per pile in Elora, Fergus, Guelph, Kitchener, Waterloo, Orangeville, and surrounding areas within 75km of Elora. Final pricing depends on pile depth, soil conditions, and load requirements. Call 519-546-6541 for a free quote.

Are helical piles better than concrete footings for a deck?

For most Ontario deck projects, helical piles (screw piles) outperform concrete footings in several ways: they are load-ready immediately after installation (no 28-day curing wait), they resist frost heave better than poured concrete, they are permit-approved, and they require no excavation or concrete mixing. JKG Services recommends helical piles for new deck foundations across Centre Wellington and surrounding areas.

Do helical piles require a building permit in Ontario?

Yes — any deck over 24 inches above grade in Ontario requires a building permit, and the foundation (including helical piles) must be engineered and permit-approved. JKG Services installs permit-approved galvanized helical piles that meet Ontario Building Code requirements.

How deep are helical piles installed?

In Ontario, helical piles are typically installed below the frost line — a minimum of 4 feet (1.2m) deep, though most residential installations go 5–7 feet depending on soil conditions and load requirements. JKG Services determines the correct depth for each project based on the structure and local soil.

What structures can helical piles support?

Helical piles (screw piles) can support decks, porches, sheds, garages, home additions, pergolas, and other light-to-medium structures. JKG Services installs helical pile foundations for residential projects across Elora, Fergus, Guelph, Kitchener, Waterloo, and Orangeville.

How long does helical pile installation take?

A typical residential helical pile installation for a deck foundation takes 2–4 hours. Because there is no concrete to pour or cure, the structure can be built on the piles the same day. JKG Services completes most helical pile jobs in a single visit.
